Born in the Philippines and raised in Washington, Chera has been involved in many community organizations such as Isangmahal (an arts collective of API spoken word and multi-media artists) and Philippine US Solidarity Organization (PUSO). She also helped found the Filipina progressive organization Gabriela Seattle. Chera later served as a board member of the Filipino Community of Seattle from 2009 - 2013. After many years of involvement with community organizations, and working for non-profits in youth development and education, she and her husband decided to host a monthly pop-up restaurant, Food & Sh*t, which showcases modern Filipino cuisine in Sept 2013. This side project branched out to a business when they opened up Hood Famous Bakeshop in November 2014, where Chera brings community together around food and utilizes our taste buds to express culture. Most recently, Chera and her husband received the 2015 Visionary Leadership Award from Northwest Asian Weekly for their pop up, and the 2016 International Examiners Readers Choice Award - Best Desserts for Hood Famous Bakeshop.
